WHEN IS IT TIME FOR AIR CONDITIONING REPLACEMENT?

Central air AC units are powerful and convenient, and they can last 10, 20, 30 years or more sometimes before permanently breaking down. But like everything else, they don’t last forever -and when it is time for a replacement, you are losing money every day you delay.

With exceptionally old and outdated models, it may be obvious when it is time to replace, but in many cases, you may need a professional inspection to determine the cost of repair versus replacement so you can make an informed decision. If your current air conditioner is very low efficiency, you may benefit sufficiently from an upgrade to an Energy Star or other efficient and eco-friendly model even before your current AC reaches its full lifespan limits.

Another factor to consider is that your current unit and/or ducts may not be able to maintain high indoor air quality. As dust, pathogens, and other contaminants in the air you breathe can cause serious respiratory conditions (especially for the elderly, children, and those who already have asthma or allergies), this is not a small concern.

On the other hand, there are many instances where one or more components of an air conditioner need to be replaced, but not the whole unit. Or, your ducts may need to be cleaned or repaired. A duct leak test done by professional energy experts may reveal the problem. The bottom line is to save money and save the planet -weighing the costs of repair versus replacement, how often your system has already needed repair over the last year or two, hold old your air conditioner is, and how much you stand to save month by month given higher efficiency are all key factors in determining if a new system is needed at present.

SELECTING YOUR NEW AIR CONDITIONING UNIT

Once you have determined that you need a new air conditioner, the next step is to select the AC unit most appropriate to meet your needs and expectations. Given the nearly endless array of brands and models on the modern market, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and a bit bewildered when asked to choose a new AC unit. Pure Eco personnel, however, possess in-depth knowledge of the market and know how to optimally match air conditioners to building types and local climate patterns.

Here are some basic guidelines for choosing your new AC unit:

  • Get a unit of the right size for the space to be cooled. The power output of the unit must be at a sufficient “tonnage” level to handle so many square feet (or cubic feet) of air to be conditioned. A 1.5-ton unit, for example, can only efficiently handle a little over 1,000 square feet; while a 2.5-ton option can handle well over 1,500 square feet and a 5 ton unit over 5,000 square feet.
  • Take into account climate, your typical cooling settings, the condition of your insulation and other energy efficiency elements, and the structure (floor plan) of your building in deciding on AC unit size and power level.
  • Check the energy efficiency ratings of the different options. See which ones are Energy Star Certified. If a unit is more efficient, remember that that means it is better for the environment besides being better for your electric bill!
  • Check the HSPF number. You want a heat pump on your new air conditioner with a heating season performance factor (HSPF) of at least 7.7 or higher.
  • Note the SEER ratio. Also look for seasonal energy efficiency (SEER) ratio of 13 or more for all new air conditioning systems. A more efficient unit will bump up the overall system efficiency and could qualify you for energy upgrade tax credits or rebates.
  • Consider how low maintenance your AC unit and system will be. You want not just efficiency but also reliability. And you need to consider durability too -how many years is it going to likely last? How long will it take for the new air conditioner to pay for itself?

AIR CONDITIONING MAINTENANCE PLANS

Another thing to be aware of is that you can join an air conditioning system maintenance plan when you get a new unit and/or air ducts. This functions a little like an insurance plan to keep your system in good condition for the long haul at an affordable price. Plans will include regular tune-ups and check-ups to ensure you catch any problems early and get the longest high-performance lifespan out of your air conditioner.

Even if you don’t join a maintenance plan, however, be sure to get annual inspections and not to delay repairs and occasional inspections when a problem is suspected. Making repairs early helps prevent collateral damage and saves you money in the long run.

Consider all the possible issues that can occur with air conditioners and their ductwork over many years of constant use -even with perfect installation and no misuse. Ducts can leak air and have low airflow issues. AC units can have too low or too high refrigerant charges. The compressor or fan controls could wear out if the unit is turned on/off very frequently or because of corrosion of wires and connection terminals. Or, the thermostat sensor could get moved out of correct position, causing constant cycling or other erratic behavior. Finally, it’s possible a clog could develop and drainage problems could develop.

Proper maintenance and/or a maintenance plan will mean that such issues are much less likely to ever occur; and if they do, they can be caught and corrected early, which not only extends the life of your unit but also saves you money by getting your unit up to full efficiency again faster.

THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM REPLACEMENT PROCESS

Replacing your air conditioning system is a major investment and a multi-step process. In most situations, the whole job can be finished in a single day, but it will take at least several hours unless it is a fairly small scale job. As mentioned above, the process begins by assessing your current air conditioning system’s condition and determining if you need a total replacement, and if so, which type and size of the unit would be ideal.

We can give you a detailed quote once the inspection process is complete and we know exactly which elements you want to be included in your system. Our quotes are always no-obligation and we can run several different quotes based on different options so you can make a fully informed decision and not break your budget.

Once we arrive on schedule to begin the work, the first thing to do is to clear the work area and protect any vulnerable flooring with plastic sheeting or newspapers. All risks of damaging property are eliminated from the get-go and we always put safety first and exercise conscientious care as we continue the task. If your HVAC ducts or air conditioner are located in an attic, crawlspace, basement, or out of doors -it makes no difference, we know how to handle it from start to finish.

Next comes the disassembly of the old air conditioner, ducts, or other equipment so it can be removed with ease and without risk of injury or property damage. Note that we do not have to install the new unit in the same location as the old one -you may want to move it out of the attic, for example, as that’s not always the most efficient location for HVAC components.

If you need ductwork to be cleaned, repaired, or replaced, that will be the next task. The full ducts and other system parts should be fully in place before the new AC unit is installed. Often, ducts will only need to be modified or repaired, and if a full replacement is necessary, that’s where it could take more than one day to fully install everything in some larger scale systems.

Finally, the new air conditioner is put in place. The air handler, evaporator, compressor, condenser, condensate drain line and pump, and other components must be properly connected and set up. All major components should also be tested and inspected upon installation of the new unit to ensure all will work at top efficiency. Sometimes, new wiring or circuit breaker upgrades (or other electrical system adjustments) may have to be made as well if you are getting a more powerful AC system installed (as compared to the old one.)

WINDOW UNITS & MORE

We work on a number of air conditioners, from window units to large roof systems. With our years of experience, we’ve certainly seen a large variety of air conditioning types.

Pure Eco does more than just disconnect an old AC unit and plug in the new one. We take the time to make sure the whole job is done right from beginning to end. We also understand that unexpected issues can jump up when air conditioning systems are being replaced, such as rotten wall studs being discovered, electrical upgrade needs being realized, unexpected ductwork repairs, or other issues. We are prepared to deal with it as it comes -to save you time and money.

Also, we make sure that we fully test your newly installed system afterward before leaving the job site. That means pressure and vacuum tests and adjustment of refrigerant levels if necessary. And we then go over proper maintenance and operation instructions with you and answer any questions you may have. Finally, we also can make recommendations on how else to improve your home or business’ energy efficiency such as by installing new insulation, new vents, and ducts, new attic fans or a radiant barrier, or by having air sealing done to your full building envelope.

In short, we are a one-stop shop for your full energy efficiency needs. And we can perform any other services you like while on premises, or we can discuss them with you and schedule them for a future date if you like.

WHY CHOOSE PURE ECO?

Pure Eco is not just another air conditioning and home insulation company -we can honestly say that our company stands out head and shoulders above the competition in multiple ways. Ask any of our former customers or check out our online reviews at Yelp and elsewhere, and we believe you will find our customer satisfaction rate is extremely high.

We offer you full-orbed energy efficiency services for both residential and commercial buildings under one roof. Our expertise is deep and wide, and we have long been building relationships with local L.A. Area residents by helping them save money on their power bill while lowering their carbon footprint simultaneously.

Also, we offer assistance in helping you qualify for federal, state, and local energy efficiency tax credits and rebates or LEED certification for businesses. We know how to save you the maximum amount on initial installation both pre- and post-incentives and from month to month on your energy bill for years or even decades to come!

We Can Get You Incentives And Rebates To Save You Money!

At Pure Eco, we are familiar with many government sponsored rebate and incentive programs, one or more of which may apply to your energy efficiency upgrade.

To help lower our “collective carbon footprint,” California and local counties and cities often invest in making homeowners’ attics and ceilings more energy efficient and “earth friendly,” just like you do!

There may be federal tax credits that apply when you “weatherize” your home as well, though many of these programs expired in 2011. We can check to see if any still apply, but your best bet is state and local incentives.

You can check for energy efficiency incentives state by state by clicking this energy.gov link and running a search on California. Or, you can check this SoCal link to search for possible rebates and incentives that may apply to your project.

However, you can just ask our staff at Pure Eco, and given your project’s parameters, we can find out which government programs you would qualify for.

At Pure Eco, we can find ways to save you money upfront and month to month by boosting your energy efficiency and lowering your heating and cooling bills. We can assess your project quickly and give you an accurate, upfront estimate and schedule your project start date at the soonest possible date that is convenient to you.
