Few of us stop to think, on a daily basis, about what quality of air we and our families are breathing in our indoor living spaces. And yet, often enough, that air is not nearly as clean and safe as we would like to assume it is.
What can possibly be wrong with your indoor air? Here are some of the most common contaminants that can affect it:
All that and more can get into your indoor air, linger, circulate through the HVAC system again and again, and ultimately get breathed in by you or a family member.
These problems with indoor air quality are not a mere inconvenience. They can be serious, when left unaddressed for long periods of time. Poor indoor air can increase the risk of respiratory disorders, coughing and wheezing, chronic headaches, overactive allergies, and accumulation of harmful toxins in your system.

You don’t have to “just live with” poor indoor air. There are ways to significantly and consistently improve the quality of the air you breathe inside your house.
First of all, eliminate the sources of “bad air” wherever you can. For example, detect and eliminate mold and mildew – and eliminate the high humidity that is allowing it to grow. Use natural cleaning solutions wherever possible. And be sure you have good insulation and ventilation so air circulation in and out of your home is at the proper rate and is fully under control.
But, even when we do our very best to eliminate air pollutant sources, and install a good envelope and ventilation system, pollutants still manage to get into our air. That’s where UV air cleaners and air scrubbers come into play.
Both of these modern air cleaning systems can drastically improve the quality of your indoor air. They purify the air by removing particulate contaminants and by “zapping” away harmful gases and pathogens with UV light.
Many air purification systems are installed directly onto the duct work of your HVAC system, central heat, or ventilation system. This effects whole house filtration. But, you can also use portable air purifiers to clean the air in just one room.
There are numerous models and brands of air cleaners, but there are only two basic functions when it comes to actually cleaning your air: particle removal and gas removal.
Mechanical filters and electronic filters are generally used to eliminate harmful particles from your air, be they dust, pollen, smoke, mold spores, or “something else.” HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters are the main player in this category. “Air scrubbers” are one of the most efficient of all modern devices for particle-removal.
Some air cleaners, such as those that utilize UV light, will remove harmful gases from your air as well, along with harmful bacteria and viruses. Filters may still be used as well. When UV light and filters are combined, you can thoroughly clean your air in every way!
Those air cleaning systems that utilize ultraviolet light are among the most advanced on the market today. UV air cleaners can not only wipe out dust, pollen, smoke-particles, and the like. They can also kill off bacteria and mold spores.
Pure Eco staff can come and install a UV air cleaner on your furnace or AC system so that clean air, instead of dirty air, will be pumped throughout your house from day to day. This will not only improve the air you breathe, but it will also reduce cleaning costs for your furnace or other HVAC system because dirt and grime will get trapped in the filter that would otherwise have gotten stuck in the furnace or on the duct work.
UV filters are especially good for killing off mold. It can make it difficult for black mold to grow in your house. And UV light also has a big impact on reduction of allergens and pathogens in the air you breathe. Many people who had trouble sleeping at night due to irritants in the air have seen that problem “zapped away” after installing a UV air cleaner.
Now, you can get UV light air cleaners without an actual filter. Some people and companies place UV lamps inside of duct work to kill off pathogens that often grow there and spread to the rest of the building. But, in general, you’re better off using both UV light and mechanical filtration in tandem rather than going with just one or the other.
A few final words about UV air cleaners. First, they are a newer form of technology – and like anything that is cutting edge, they have a shorter track record and cost more than older technologies. But, we are confident they have already proven their worth, despite what some negative online reviewers would have us believe.
Second, UV air cleaners are more efficient than traditional air filters. However, UV bulbs do gradually decline in effectiveness (about 15% per year) and so should be replaced periodically.
It may not seem like air is the kind of thing you could “scrub,” but “air scrubber” is nonetheless the name of one of the most advanced types of air cleansing systems available today.
Originally, it was called air scrubber because liquids were used to “scrub” the air of gases like carbon dioxide. Today, there are both wet and dry air scrubbers (that do or don’t utilize water and/or other liquids in cleaning the air that passes through them.) A “dry” scrubber will use a fabric or mechanical filter instead of water.
In general, the major reason to use an air scrubber as opposed to an ordinary traditional air filtration system is to eliminate harmful or annoying gases.
Air scrubbers are popular commercially at businesses where a lot of unpleasant fumes may accumulate in the course of a day’s work. For example, they are much used at nail salons, printing presses, or anywhere where cigarette or other smoke may accumulate.
If you have significant gas pollutants in your indoor air at home, then it makes sense to install an air scrubber. Air scrubbers are also extremely effective at removing mold spores, dust, pollen, and other very fine particles, if it’s a dry scrubber with a filter.
Remove all of these contaminants, and you not only breathe easier and healthier, but you also will likely eliminate that unpleasant odor associated with the harmful gases you’ve targeted with the air scrubber.
You can use an air scrubber with HEPA filter to cleanse your air, but also be sure that you have proper home ventilation so you’re bringing in fresh, filtered, and healthy outdoor air.
Many air scrubbers use carbon to absorb smoke and foul odors, along with various gases. These carbon air scrubbers are especially effective at handling areas with large square footage.
And finally, we should mention one other strategy sometimes utilized with air scrubber systems: negative air pressure. A negative air machine is basically an air scrubber that creates negative pressure in the area being air-cleaned, so that contaminants are naturally drawn out of the room via ducts and deposited in an unused space or outside.

There is certainly some expense in making your home’s breathable air as high quality as possible, but when you consider that it’s mostly a one-time expense with relatively low ongoing usage/maintenance costs, and that it pays out benefits continually – getting an “air upgrade” is indeed worthwhile.
Whether you get a UV air cleaner, an up to date air scrubber system, or both, you can expect to see benefits in the following areas:
With very little added monthly expense, you'll have the peace of mind of knowing you and your family are truly breathing clean, healthy air.
Mold and mildew growth will be inhibited, and mold/mildew spores will be filtered or zapped out of your air even if they get into it.
Bacteria and viruses and the diseases carried by dust mites will be greatly reduced, having a positive impact on your health.
Smoke residue, and thus the harmful effects of second hand smoke, will be eliminated.
Fumes and toxins emitted by household products and building materials will be filtered out of your air.
Harmful gases will be eliminated by your air scrubber so you don't breathe them into your lungs.
You'll breath in far less dust and dirt, which can help reduce coughing, sneezing, and headaches.
Those with allergies or respiratory health conditions (like asthma), as well as children and the elderly, will especially benefit.
Your furnace and duct work will be kept cleaner for longer once an air cleaner of some kind is attached. This will save you money on HVAC maintenance in the long term.
Installation of an air scrubber and/or UV cleaner will add value to your home and will be a selling point should you ever put your home up for sale.

There may be federal tax credits that apply when you “weatherize” your home as well, though many of these programs expired in 2011. We can check to see if any still apply, but your best bet is state and local incentives.
You can check for energy efficiency incentives state by state by clicking this energy.gov link and running a search on California. Or, you can check this SoCal link to search for possible rebates and incentives that may apply to your project.
However, you can just ask our staff at Pure Eco, and given your project’s parameters, we can find out which government programs you would qualify for.
At Pure Eco, we can find ways to save you money upfront and month to month by boosting your energy efficiency and lowering your heating and cooling bills. “Air scrubbers and air cleaners are often used after a fire to clean up the air from smoke and smoke particles.
Pure Eco Inc. has the right tools and know-how to help your home or business recover after a fire. Air scrubbers can also be used to clean your home’s air from allergens, dust, and other particles.
Pure Eco Inc. uses two types of air cleaners: UV air cleaners and air scrubbers. UV cleaners can clean the air in your house from mold and mold particles which can be harmful to your health. Air scrubbers and UV air cleaners remove pathogens and volatile particles from the air in your home. This means the air you and your family breathe is cleaner.
Cleaner air has a positive impact on your HVAC system, as mold spores, debris, and allergens are scrubbed off the air before they reach the HVAC system. Your HVAC system performs better for longer.
